Guest Artists
Visiting artists from around the nation and around the globe
enhance the learning experiences in the department. Here's
a sampling of some of the more recent guests.
· Andrew Wade, former Head of Voice at the Royal Shakespeare Company in England, returned to campus to provide workshops to Theatre Arts students Thursday and Friday, Nov. 15-16, 2007. The two afternoon workshops included responding to prepared Shakespeare monologues and a more general one on vocal explorations of texts. Wade has been responsible for overseeing all the voice work for the Royal Shakespeare Company and has traveled widely lecturing, leading master classes and workshops, and coaching theatre companies and actors throughout the world. He is an acknowledged master on the subject of voice and text and has consulted for major films such as "Shakespeare in Love." Wade previously was in residence at Virginia Tech for 2 1/2 weeks in Oct. 2005 as a guest artist in residence when he provided workshops for students in the performance classes and worked with the cast of the spring production of Romeo & Juliet.
· Tim Cunningham, a professional performer in the art of clowning and physical performance, offered a workshop to Theatre Arts students Monday, Nov. 12, 2007. The workshop focused on clown work, simplicity, and truthful play. He also shared his work in social justice and social circus through Clowns Without Borders. Cunningham has studied physical theatre and movement at the Dell'Arte International School of Physical Theatre and at Lume Teatro in Campinas, Brazil. He has performed physical comedy and clown throughout the U.S. as well as in eleven other countries.
· Guest artist Tibor Varszegi from Hungary visited campus Nov. 12, 2007, to perform his one-man show, The Age of Calling to Account I: The Crook. The title refers to a shepherd's staff, using the stick as a metaphor for creative forces in the universe. The work incorporates Hungarian songs, dance, and spoken word. The performance was held in the Black Box Theatre in the Performing Arts Building, and was supported in part by the College of Liberal Arts & Human Sciences.
· Vocal coach Andrew Wade, formerly of the Royal Shakespeare Company in London, was in residence as a guest artist in the Theatre Arts department for 2 1/2 weeks, Oct. 17-Nov. 2, 2005, providing workshops for students in the performance classes and working with the cast for the spring production of Romeo & Juliet.
· Marco Lully and Luciana Codispoti from Luoghi dell'Arte in Rome, Italy, offer intensive workshop training in voice and commedia dell' arte to the theatre arts department (spring 2005)
· Guest Artist Tim Mooney performs his original one-man shows, Moliere Than Thou and Criteria, March 17-18, 2005.
· Internationally-renowned theatre artist Ping Chong and VT alum Michael Rohd co-directed the world premiere of God Favors The Predator (fall 2004). Their work was featured in the summer 2005 issue of Virginia Tech Research magazine.
· Mask and Movement workshops offered by actors from TriArts in Chicago (fall 2004)
· "An Introduction to Fitzmaurice Voice Work" led by director and TA alum Andy Belser (fall 2004)
· Master Puppeteer and Puppet Maker Stephen Kaplin visits campus with "Shadow Puppet" workshop (fall 2004)
· Jan Cohen-Cruz, community-based theatre practitioner and author, conducts Diversity Training workshops on campus and in the community (fall 2003)
· Carpetbag Theatre, Inc. brings workshops and performance to campus (fall 2003)
· Emsa Lakovich, guest director from Bosnia (spring 2003)
