The MFA Degree at Virginia Tech is a small specialized professional training program allowing emphasis in individual or combined areas. The work is based in actual production problems and students usually begin designing in the first year. Facilities and technologies are excellent with some unique opportunities not commonly available in graduate programs. Students design on campus and off campus both locally and beyond. Third year students participate in professional internships in the US and abroad.
Admission is by interview and portfolio review in Blacksburg. We believe it is important to see the program and meet other students and faculty firsthand. The program is small to allow maximum design opportunity for the MFA student. Advantage is taken of classes in other departments, especially art, architecture, and engineering as appropriate to the student's needs. Since the program is individualized and tutorial there is not a typical list of classes nor is there a typical plan of study. Each student's progress is monitored by an advisory committee of faculty and the shape of each semester is determined based on the professional needs and growth potential of the student.
While visiting our website please look at the Design Area Home and the the general Departmental Home if you came to this page directly. To learn more about the graduate program in a specifia area please contact the design faculty directly.
