An Artistic Vision Statement

A Statement in Progress

Why Make Theatre at Virginia Tech —

We produce new and contemporary plays and new visions of the classics to discover how our performances may connect and stimulate people in the many communities on and off the Virginia Tech campus and in the New River Valley. We recognize this is both an arrogant and humbling intention. We find balance in the positive value of human connection - the interaction of mind, imagination, and spirit.

We believe the art of theatre invites a partnership between the performance and the audience. We believe the event of theatre exists only in sharing imagery through that communion, during the time of that performance. As such, we believe that theatre is both a community event and a way to build community.

We believe this is true whether a production is in the classroom, workshop lab, Studio Theatre, or on-the-road; whether it is shaped by needs of education, faculty/staff creative development, guest artist opportunities, community issues and concerns, or just plain old-fashioned exuberant passion.

We believe there is a great artistic value in producing within our resources of time, people, material, and finances. The assignment of physical ingredients for each production is based on how the connection with its audience is best accomplished.
