Scholarship Information — Department of Theatre & Cinema

The Department of Theatre & Cinema at Virginia Tech offers several scholarships, in addition to those that are administered by the Virginia Tech Office of Financial Aid.

Arts Scholarship Program:

Each year, the Department of theatre Arts awards two scholarships in the amount of $2000.00 each to talented freshman or transfer students who have been admitted to the university as Theatre Arts Majors. In addition we award two $2,000. scholarships to rising Sophomore Theatre Arts Majors, two $2,000. scholarships to rising Junior Theatre Majors, and two $2,000.00 scholarships to rising Senior Theatre Majors annually.

Conditions of Application for Theatre Arts Scholarships: (1) Student must apply and be accepted for admission to Virginia Tech through the University’s Office of Admissions. (2) Students must complete the scholarship application procedures outlined below.

Application Procedures:
(1) Obtain a copy of your secondary school transcripts.

(2) Obtain two letters of recommendation/evaluation from individuals who can speak directly of you abilities and work in the theatre.

(3) Complete the Scholarship Application form.

(4) Interview/audition with approved Virginia Tech Theatre Arts faculty on the campus of Virginia Tech or at an approved audition location -- such as a state or national Thespian conference or state theatre festival.

You may either bring the materials in 1-3 above with you to your audition, or you may mail them by March 15 to:

Other Scholarships Awarded by the Department of Theatre & Cinema:

The Samuel Robert Cox Memorial Scholarship is an annual award, given to that undergraduate Theatre Arts Major who has made significant contributions in multiple areas of theatre, has a QCA of 3.0 or above, and is a Virginia resident. The recipient may not also be on any other scholarship offered by the department of Theatre Arts. The award is in the amount of $500.00

The Donald A. Drapeau Academic Scholarship is an annual award, given in honor of the man who for some thirty seven years lead the Department of Theatre & Cinema and fostered the development of it’s faculty, staff and students. It is intended for a freshman, sophomore or junior, whose QCA is 3.0 or above and has demonstrated excellence in one or more areas of Theatre. The award is in the amount of $500.00

Box/Buxton Scholarship is an annual award, intended for a rising junior or rising senior Theatre Arts major (having completed at least 45 hours of course work) with a QCA of 2.5 or higher. This student must have demonstrated financial need and/or made significant contribution to the non-performance area of the department’s production activities. The award is in the amount of $2,000.00
